Chemically, Sodium CMC is the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose formed by the reaction of high purity alpha cellulose powder with caustic soda lye and ethanol media to first form alkali cellulose and then react with Monochloroacetic acid under controlled conditions to form CMC.
Properties of Perry CMC Solution :
(1) Effect of pH :-
Viscosity of Sodium CMC Solution shows maximum viscosity at pH 7.0-9.0 above pH 9.0 viscosity start decreasing and below pH 4.0 free acid of CMC formed.
(2) Effect of Temperature :
Viscosity of Perry CMC decreases as the temperature of solution increases, but does not affect original viscosity, provided solution is not heated for longer hours at High Temperature 90°C and above.
(3) Effect with Salts :-
The effect of salts depend upon
i) Concentration of salt
ii) pH of solution
iii) D.S of CMC
iv) Manner of Additio
a) High D.S. CMC are more tolerant to salts than low D.S.
b) Addition of salt to a sodium CMC solution increases the tolerance of salt, where as addition of salt and CMC simultaneously will reduce salt tolerance.
Sodium CMC solution is prone to bacterial and chemical attack. When sodium CMC solution is stored, a preservative should be added to prevent viscosity reduction.

CMC should be stored in a dry place. Do not allow loose CMC to come into contact of moisture.
